Special Enrollment Period

Special Enrollment Period

Special Enrollment Period is a time outside of the open enrollment period during which you and your family may be able to sign up for health coverage. You may qualify for a special enrollment period up to 60 days following certain life events that involve a change in family status (for example, marriage or birth of a child) or loss of other health coverage. Job-based plans must provide a special enrollment period of 30 days.

Changes that qualify for a Special Enrollment Period

  • If you have a baby, adopt a child, or put your child into foster care: Your coverage can start the day of the event — even if you enroll in the plan up to 60 days afterward
  • If you get married, lose health coverage, or move to a new state
  • Changes in your income that affect current health coverage
  • Gaining membership in a federally-recognized tribe or status as an Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act (ANCSA) Corporation shareholder
  • Become a U.S. citizen
  • Leave incarceration
  • Change of dependency status of someone on your plan
  • Death of a covered member of your household
  • Turning 26 or older and aging off your parent’s plan
  • AmeriCorps members starting or ending their service
